Head Lice Helpful Tips – This Is What Works For Us.

Head Lice are the bane of my life as far as things my child can catch goes. We’ve tried several methods of prevention and I figured it was time to write some Head lice helpful tips.

My head lice helpful tips won’t cost a lot either – you just need a few essentials in and you’re covered.

I hate head lice. Almost all children will experience it, especially if your child goes to nursery or preschool where they’re around other children.

A female head louse lays eggs close to the root where the scalp keeps them warm. They’re tiny and really difficult to see. After 7-10 days the lice hatch and the eggshells stay glued in place – these are nits. They become more noticeable once they’ve grown from the scalp and look a bit like dandruff but are glued to the hair.

Head lice feed by biting the scalp and feeding on blood. They take 6-10 days to become fully grown and once mature they can crawl from head to head. (taken from here)

Nitty Gritty Head lice Comb

There was a time when H had it for what felt like three months – they’d clear and she’d be reinfected, and it was so frustrating. Here’s our helpful tips to get rid :

• Get a good nit comb. We have a Nitty Gritty which is good at getting the eggs off the hair shaft. It will also occasionally pick up the lice too. I’d advise splashing out and getting the Nitty Gritty as it has been the most reliable, though it’s not easy to clean. Wet conditioned hair is the best way to get the blighters – though dry combing works too – it just hurts more.
• As well as a nit comb, I’ve found our electric Robi Comb Pro will loosen the lice from the hair – it occasionally zaps them. Working the two of these intitially will clear the hair pretty well.

Robi Comb Pro Head Lice comb - head lice helpful tips - these are good for getting the actual lice out of your hear. Scratch scratch

• Look out for the signs when your child has them. I know H may have them if she has a red patch at the back of her neck and behind her ears. You can also see little bite marks on her scalp – red blood spots. Or she’s scratching a lot…

Head lice helpful tips - bottles of Hedrin, Vosene Kids and Anovia Head On which are all reasonable and work for us.

Buying products to help the head lice stay away doesn’t come too costly either.

Poundland have sprays and shampoos in stock a lot (Anovia Head On), and I’ve spotted some Tea Tree ones that Ocado sell, also for £1 each. Vosene Kids have a spray which you can leave in the hair which I’ve found is a good preventative measure.

Hedrin is one of the popular options for head lice removal. The cheapest I’ve found is for £5, there are several kinds of treatments available.
We’ve tried a few and have found them all to be as effective as the other.

You might find your child keeps getting them. We found this happened until there was a clear break when the children don’t see each other – for example Christmas holidays. Everyone needs to get rid of the lice at the same time for them to disappear.

The good news is that head lice like any kind of hair. It doesn’t have to be clean or dirty, any hair will do. They’re not fussy, they want to feed.

I feel itchy now… do you have any head lice helpful tips you’d like to add?

Fitbug Air Progress

I’ve had my Fitbug Air pedometer almost permanently clipped to my waistband this last month and a half, and the results so far are interesting.

I’ve been using the Fitbug Air – a pedometer which sends your data by bluetooth to the Fitbug app on my iPad – where it breaks down what you’re walking into the kind of data I understand.

I’ve found there’s been occasional days when I completely forget to wear it but generally I’m doing well. On days at work I can average over 6000 steps which includes walking down the hill at lunchtime (at a fast pace, I only have 30 minutes lunch) while when I’m at home my levels drop.

Fitbug Air Weekly

The Fitbug app has had an update recently too, and I’m finding scrolling between weeks to compare my data is a lot easier. In July it looks like this :

Fitbug Air July

I can break that down into week and see a few times I’ve beaten my aerobic steps target, so it has been adjusted –  the Fitbug Air doesn’t make it easy for me and adjusts according to what I’ve done.

There is a section to put in your goals, although you can’t just do 12.2 for 12 stone 2 – it has to be in pounds, so I haven’t filled it in yet. It’d be good to have an option as more often than not I’m tired and don’t have the time to think.

Today’s steps are pretty good – see here :

Fitbug Air Today

My aerobic step count is pretty high, which I’m putting down to running like crazy for the train this morning as well as walking fast at lunchtime, the totals please me a lot and I like the breakdown of my steps.

The next thing I need to look at is nutrition, but while I’m doing Porridge on Tuesday that may be too much logging, so I’m going to leave it for now and work on my fitness. The Fitbug Air stays on my waistband and has only fallen off once (I knocked it with my hand)  which is great as I often just forget it’s there.

My next task is to work on understanding a bit more in the menus, so far it all makes a lot of sense and I’m feeling healthier exercise-wise.

I’ve been told the Android version of the Fitbug app should be launching around October time although this hasn’t been confirmed. I also realised you can’t transmit your data to your iPad from the Fitbug Air without a wireless connection – so having it compatible with my phone would be a huge bonus.

Uniqlo Kids launches in the UK

Uniqlo Kids launches in the UK.

Uniqlo Kids is finally launching in the UK – I’ve been a loyal customer of theirs for over ten years now, and I’m so excited!

Uniqlo Kids

From August 15th all the UK stores will stock clothes as well as online! This makes me VERY excited.

Uniqlo (for me) make really good quality clothes, have worked with some fantastic designers and companies (Cath Kidston, Laura Ashley, Celia Birtwell, Lulu Guinness, Greengate, Disney, Pixar and more) – moving into kids clothes in all stores is a great thing! (though not for my bank balance)

The range will be the same high-quality fabrics and aesthetic you already know, the range will offer basics and key on-trend pieces, fun outer items and more, with kids needs in mind.

Uniqlo started in Japan around 1985, with the words ‘unique’ and ‘clothing’ amalgamating to become Uniqlo. I’ve found their clothes to be affordable and really good quality. Their jeans are one of the best fits for me too – and since I’ve been losing weight I can buy their women’s jeans again which is great. The Uniqlo kids range has been available in Japan for a while now, and I seem to recall a UK trial run in the West End stores and Bluewater, so to see this being rolled out to other stores is brilliant news. I’ll be there on the 15th (thank goodness it’s payday…) and probably buying way too much – though not spending a lot (I hope!).

Uniqlo Kids

Make sure you drop in on August 15th to check out how your favourite one-stop clothing shop has made life even easier, offering easy style solutions for the whole family under one roof.

I am a Uniqlo affiliate, if you want to see their adult range of clothes please click on the logo at the bottom. Uniqlo Kids range to follow soon!

The Happy Badger Popped By

The Happy Badger is a very generous badger who donates money to charities you nominate.

The Happy Badger popped by Mum Friendy and donated to Cancer Research. My dad died of bowel cancer, my mum has had two forms of cancer as well as other complications and my nana died from leukaemia, Cancer is something which I’ve lived alongside for over twenty years.

Cancer is something our entire family has lived alongside.

I’ve done Race For Life several times (I had a year off this year but intend to do it again next year, possibly with H) and raised upwards of £750 each time – running or walking or jogging with friends, raising cash along the way for Cancer Research. See, I figure any money which helps towards a cure for cancer means at some point in the future H or her children will talk about it like it was an age-old disease, something people don’t get any more. Maybe there’ll never be a cure, but every penny helps towards research.

I’ve sat with two of my closest family members as they passed away – and I don’t want H to go through that, I want research to make a difference once we’re all a bit older. Every bit of money makes a difference, and that has to be a good thing.

So thank you Happy Badger, I really appreciate your donation. I nominate http://www.cancerresearchuk.org/ as that covers the many cancers we’ve come across.

I find writing about it all quite difficult even several years on, but I do recognise the need for awareness and making sure people know to check for the signs. My dad didn’t, and the doctors didn’t suspect a thing – in fact it was only when he was diagnosed all the symptoms made sense (bowel cancer with secondary cancer in the liver) and it surprised everyone.

Pocket Money – What Do You Do?

Pocket money is one of those things which will creep up on us all before we know it. We’ve been tackling it early but keeping it simple.

Pocket money, oh joy. H isn’t even four yet and we’ve been doing it for a year or so now – last year we were one of the finalists in a money saving competition and over the year we’ve done lots of 5p tasks, putting the money into her moneybox as we go.

pocket money box

The tooth fairy paid a visit recently and bumped up the amount to a much higher one (okay, just £1 but in H terms that’s like a million pounds) – and we’ve not been as good at assigning 5p tasks as we should be.

Locally we’ve a shop, Calladoodles which I’m going to post a feature on soon – it’s a lovely shop with gorgeous handmade things on sale and we’re in there most weeks. They’ve just opened a mail order site and need to be checked out – I could spend so much in there. They stock Miffy things (we love Miffy in our house) as well as Cath Kidston and Orla Kiely… yum.

The last time we were in, H spotted a bracelet she liked so we decided we’d count her pennies and if she had enough we could spend them in there – and as of this morning she has enough. My little girl will have a little purse with her savings in, and will spend it on something she really wants – I’m a bit excited!

We’ve kept it simple as well, while this isn’t pocket money it won’t be long before she’s asking for some. So what is the right amount for an almost four year old starting school in just over a month? I’m thinking 50p a week with anything extra being things she’s earned (at 5p a time). I want her to have some money sense and ideally add the savings to her bank account – what do you do?

Kattoo – A Temporary Tattoo

Kattoo is a brilliant idea – a temporary phone number tattoo which you can stick on your child.

KattooKattoo tattoos are for children, and a great idea, and really simple.

You peel off the backing paper of the tattoo.

Place it on your child’s skin making sure it’s clean and dry.

Put a wet cloth on top to seal the tattoo onto the skin.

Peel off the backing paper.

Allow it to dry for a minute.

Write your phone number in the space provided.

That’s it – how simple?

Kattoo

I like the idea as we often lose things, so having a band with this kind of information is handy, but you can almost guarantee we’d change our number if H had something like that- whereas with a Kattoo you’re writing whatever is current.

H tried it out today and it stayed strong all day, no cracks and my handwriting was still readable.

We’re going to Lollibop in just over a fortnight and will be using our other Kattoo tattoo we received in our BritMums goody bags – and I’ve already ordered another pack as we have some local fairs coming up in the next few weeks.

Kattoo
Things you need to know about Kattoo:

A pack of six costs £5.99 (the website says free UK Shipping)
They come in six different colours, with an ‘if I am lost’ message with a box to write your phone number
They are safe, non-toxic, FDA Certified and CE Certified. They’re also latex free and cosmetically safe.
Depending on your skin type a Kattoo will last 2-5 days.
Kattoos are UV blockers, so you don’t need to put sunscreen on your Kattoo area (though make sure you put it around it, obviously!)

We had a few comments today from people who spotted H’s tattoo and could see what a brilliant idea it is. While I know she’s the kind of child who doesn’t tend to run off, there’s every chance she could, so knowing there’s a way for her to tell someone where her mummy and daddy are is a good thing. I would recommend these.

I received a sample pack of two Kattoo Tattoos in my BritMums goody bag.

Stamptastic – A Personalised Name Stamp Suitable For Clothes

Stamptastic are a simple stamp and ink pad which are long-lasting. They are also the answer to my prayers – they stop the boredom when it comes to labelling H’s clothes!

Stamptastic Stamp PadsStamptastic is a simple clear resin stamp with an accompanying ink pad. You can stamp on several surfaces, including School Uniform. This appealed to me a lot – oh, the tedium that came with handwriting H’s name on every single piece of clothing at nursery. I got so bored I forgot what I was writing, and put something else in there instead. Some people call it baby brain – I call it labelling boredom brain!

After having written out twenty or more party invites recently, the next thing on the list of most boring things you have to do as a parent is labelling clothes. I have a pen I can use but after I’ve done five sets I’m bored, my pen is bored, the clothes are bored waiting for me, and I lose the will to continue.

Step forward Stamptastic. Now I can cover the pad with ink, get it into the right place and I’m able to see where I’m stamping too thanks to it being clear. Never has such a tedious job been so much fun – I LOVE it. I am living my inner librarian when I stamp, stamp, stamp – it dries quickly and even better, it stays.

Stamptastic

You can also use the stamp on lunchboxes and water bottles. I’ve found the ink doesn’t stay on as long this way, but you can always re-stamp! I prefer the Bandino bands for water bottles, as these tend to mean the bottles are easier to find (as you can guarantee there will be a minimum of five other children In Your Class with the same bottle!

I needed something to make labelling life easier and this does. I’m impressed and may have stamped lots of H’s things.

Even her shoes (top tip, the soles don’t hold the ink well, the sides do. I realise this is common sense but I just wanted to stamp and didn’t think). Now all her possessions have her name on them – and it took me a fraction of the time.

Stamptastic

We got H’s name put onto the stamp – generally Stamptastic can fit most things on there. We kept her class group off there so we can use it throughout school. At £8 for a stamp and £10 for a pad I think this is really reasonable price to pay. The convenience factor is a huge plus. (edited to add, after two five (!) years it’s still going strong too)

Each stamp is 38mm x 15mm in size, the fonts used are Arial, Arial Narrow or Abadi MT Condensed Light.

We were sent a stamp pad and stamp for the purpose of review, all opinions are mine, and that of my patience.
